Although she was not born deaf and blind, the sudden onset of an illness at nineteen months of age left her with this permanent disability. Her parents hired a young woman named Anne Sullivan, who was also visually impaired, to be her instructor. Anne taught Helen how to communicate and eventually Helen graduated from college with a Bachelors of Art Degree. Through the years Helen became an advocate for the disabled. As an author, she wrote twelve books. Helen and Anne remained friends throughout their lives.
